Understanding the Consumption of Tourism Joint Studentship with the University of Kalmar, Sweden and the University of Central Lancashire, UK, A full-time MPhil/PhD joint studentship is available for three years at the University of Central Lancashire. The studentship is subject to the University of Kalmar s terms and conditions and is open to UK/EU applicants only (due to funding restrictions). The scheme provides funding for tuition fees (£3390 for 2009/10) and a student s stipend (approximately £13,290 in 2009/10). The successful applicant will start on 1st October 2009.
Project title: Understanding the Consumption of Tourism The aim of the project will investigate motivations for tourism consumption, such as identity and social status, both for high energy tourism and more sustainable forms such as slow travel, staycations and emerging concepts such as "stillness" (when nothing special happens). It will explore to what extent unsustainable consumption is an essential element in tourism or whether more sustainable tourism could fulfil people s desires and expectations from tourism.
This project builds on the current research of Professor Stefan Gössling at University of Kalmar, Sweden and the research interests of Dr Jo Guiver at the University of Central Lancashire. The successful applicant will be co-supervised by Stefan Gössling and Professor Les Lumsdon and will be expected to spend pproximately 50% of his or her time at the Baltic Business School at the University of Kalmar, Sweden (School of Business and Economics, Linneaus University, Sweden from 1 January 2010).
